Chapter 12: The secrets contained in the formula “Ameen” and the raising of the hands

Allah instituted the faithful to pronounce the formula “Ameen” at the end of the invocation [contained in Sura Al-Fatihah], which indicates that the faithful nourishes the hope of being answered, of seeing his invocation carried out, assured and accomplished by Allah. This is the reason why Jews felt deep jealousy towards Muslims when they heard them say this formula aloud during their prayers.

Allah then instituted the devotee to raise his hands when he is about to bow, out of reverence towards Allah’s orders and to beautify the prayer. This is a form of submission to Allah practiced by the hands as is the case with other limbs of the body. It is also proof that one conforms to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Raising the hands before the bowing is therefore a beautification and an ornament for prayer, just as it indicates the veneration one feels for the different rites that compose it.

Allah then instituted the servant to pronounce the Takbir, which is pronounced during each passage from one pillar of prayer to another. It is comparable to the formula of Talbiyah that the pilgrim proclaims when going from one rite to another. The Takbir is, therefore, the motto of the prayer, as the Talbiyah is the motto of the pilgrimage so that the servant knows that the secret of prayer is to worship the Lord (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to proclaim His greatness by not worshiping other than Him.
